It’s Twixmas Time

A mother and daughter under a blanket watching a movie. Did you know that the week between Christmas and New Year’s is referred to as Twixmas? Well, neither did I, but I kind of like the sound of it! Think about it, you’re betwixt and between two major holidays with (hopefully) not too much responsibility on your plate. Sure, the kids are home, and you may not know how to fill up all the minutes of your days. That’s OK.

It is Twixmas, after all! So, let’s talk about how to spend your time and make the most of it.

The term Twixmas actually comes from the Old English word betwixt – meaning “between.” It’s usually the time of year with the least amount of commitments and responsibilities, allowing families to relax and take some downtime before the New Year (and the chaos) begins.
Now, there are many ways for your family to spend this time, but don’t go crazy trying to fit everything in! That’s not the point.

The point is to slow down, recharge, and reflect on your blessings while looking forward to the new year. So here are a few ideas you may want to try.

1. Have a lounge day.

This is the perfect time for the kids to play with some of the new toys they just got and for you to sit and relax. Maybe whip up an indulgent breakfast, then while the kids are playing, you can catch up on your favorite podcast or crack open that book you’ve been meaning to read. Brew some coffee, light the lights, cue up some fun music, and get cozy.

2. Plan a family movie day.

Either at home or in the theater. This is the quiet week when not too much is happening, so it could be fun to take a movie trip and then go out to dinner afterward. Ice cream for everyone!

3. Think about the upcoming year.

What are some of the things you’d like to do as a family? Make a plan for New Year’s Eve (even if it just consists of Chinese takeout and an early ball drop), and write down some of the fun things you’d all like to try next year.

4. Try something new.

Maybe you’ve never taken the kids ice skating or skiing. Or you keep meaning to go to the Museum of Natural History with them (me). Plan a new adventure that the whole family will remember.

Most importantly – don’t make yourself crazy! This isn’t the time to take on huge projects that can wait til next week at least. Savor this time with your crew and make some new memories that can last a lifetime.
