It’s Holi time!
Every year in March, the Holi Festival is celebrated. Holi is a Hindu Festival that originated in India, where people get to let their inner “child” out and get festive. The Holi Festival is animated! Think big crowds, colored dye, water squirters, music, and dancing. It is a family-friendly event and is especially popular amongst children. The vibe of Holi is similar to Diwali, where good triumphs over evil.
Typically, on the first day of Holi, a big fire is lit to symbolically burn away all the “evil” and give way to a colorful and vibrant new future. Then, it moves on to the fun part of Holi, where participants throw powder dye into the air or even at each other (in recent times), mimicking a kind of color war!
In a spiritual sense, the vibrant colors are rich with symbolism and have multiple meanings associated with a fresh, new start. For some, washing off after the color festival could mean a new commitment to living well, cleansing oneself of evils and demons.
Holi has been a community-appreciated event hosted by many local organizations and even schools in the last few years to encourage participation and celebration of all cultures.
The India Cultural Center Holi Fest is a fun local event to celebrate and learn more about Holi.
