Shhh…It’s Quiet Day

A family meditating together.Quiet Day – the thought of it sounds pretty amazing. A day free of all the tasks, stresses, and being pulled in a million different directions. Now, only if you can get your family on board with this blissful-sounding day!
Quiet Day appears on the calendar on February 25th.

It is a day to appreciate the sounds of silence, allow our bodies and minds to slow down, and gain peace and calm.

We all know getting a few moments of quiet time can be nearly impossible these days with all the activities, birthday parties, sports, and so much more. But if you can get your family on board for Quiet Day, you may all benefit from its rejuvenating powers.
Now, I’m not delusional. I understand that people will not be quiet all day, although can you imagine it? But I am talking about setting aside time during the day for silence – to be with your thoughts and relax your mind. You may see some very positive side effects from this practice.

One way to do this is to have an hour or so of quiet, independent reading time. Each family member gets out their current book of choice and sits in a cozy spot. You can all be together in one room and discuss your books when the time is up. Quiet Alone Time was another thing we did in my family when my kids were a bit younger. It was a time (maybe 30 minutes) for each family member to pick a spot in the house and do a quiet activity independently. Kids can thrive in independent play and come up with some great ideas.

Or, to get the full effects of silence, just be in your own thoughts for a while (which I know can be easier said than done) and then write down what you’re feeling. Some people’s creativity starts to flow, and their best thinking may come through at this time.

At the end of the day, we’re all looking for those silent moments when we can just sit, relax, and be.

Everyone needs some downtime to rejuvenate and feel their best. Quiet Day is a great starting point to hopefully implement some of these practices into your daily routine. Maybe you decide to incorporate quiet time at the end of your day. Light a candle, put on some relaxing background music, and close your eyes. Let the thoughts dart in and out of your head and see where they take you. You may be pleasantly surprised.
