Spring is here. The flowers are starting to bloom, the temperatures are rising, and if your house is like mine, all the spring sports gear is getting ready to hit the turf, diamond, and field.
As a certified “sports mom,” every season is busy, but there is something about spring that really makes my head spin. My calendar looks like a rainbow that collided with a tornado—a chaotic swirl of color-coded events. I know many of you can relate to this mayhem.
I really do love how active and involved our kids are, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Watching them play, grow, and work with a team is something I truly cherish. Not to mention all the friendships and bonds I have formed with the other moms, who I would love to think will be lifelong friends.
With all that being said, though, spring season can be a lot. Three kids in three different sports with completely different schedules, a husband who coaches, and the responsibility of being the taxi, uniform cleaner, chef, and team mom for two of said teams can be overwhelming some days.
It’s easy to lose yourself (and your mind) in all the chaos of spring sports. This year, I promise to stay as sane as possible and not let it all get to me. I’m signing a contract with myself to make sure I prioritize these four things.
1. Asking for and Being the Support for Other Moms
We’re all in the same boat here; sometimes, the tides are just different for each of us. I plan on fully embracing the community of moms that I’ve grown with. Leaning on each other for support is essential. Whether carpooling or packing an extra snack, every little bit helps.
2. Make the Most of Waiting Time
Instead of just dropping off or sitting at practice, I plan to schedule walks with friends doing the same. Getting some steps while catching up is a win-win for everyone. Turning that idle time into something productive or relaxing will help me feel more accomplished. Even if it’s just a 10-minute walk in a parking lot.
3. Fully Embrace The “Good Enough”
Let’s be real here: sports seasons aren’t the time for perfection. As much as I’d love a super clean house every day, sometimes it just isn’t going to happen (and that’s ok!), I plan to prioritize what needs to be done and give myself grace if something slips through the cracks. Who really needs an organized pantry in the middle of May?
4. Schedule Non-Sports Family Time
One thing that I really want to focus on this season is to try and schedule time together that isn’t just practices or games. When the calendar is full, it’s easy to lose touch as a family. To avoid that, I want to plan times for movie nights, breakfasts together, or even just a quick game of cards.
Surviving the spring sports season as a mom can feel like training for a marathon I didn’t sign up for. I want to keep my sanity intact until June (then summer comes, and that’s a whole different story!). I plan on embracing support and giving it where needed. After all, it takes a village to raise an athlete (and give mom a breather).
I aim for ‘good enough’ and know it’s perfectly acceptable. I prioritize self-care with walks with fellow sports moms and turn sideline small talk into therapy session strolls. Most importantly, I carve out family time that doesn’t involve bleachers, scoreboards, and yelling, “Do you have your water bottle?!”
Sometimes, the “Home” team needs as much attention as the team they lace up for. By balancing the chaos with humor and support, we can survive and maybe even enjoy the whirlwind of spring sports!
