Perfect Family Day

A family sitting on the couch.July 18 has been deemed “Perfect Family Day.” But my question is—by whom? No family is perfect, and I do not believe we should try to be.

Rather, we should all celebrate our imperfections and the things that make our family special and amazing in its unique way.

Striving for perfection within your family should not be the goal, but I do believe families should strive to be a place of love, mutual respect, and compassion—a place where you can feel safe, loved, and seen. We know that families come in all shapes and sizes—there is no one-size-fits-all definition of a perfect family.

Now more than ever, families are busy. More often than not, both parents work, and the kids’ schedules are crazy. Or maybe you’re in a single-parent household or are a grandparent or other caregiver raising children.

My point is the makeup of a family shouldn’t matter. What matters is love within the family unit, however that unit is comprised.

Instead of celebrating the perfect family today, let’s celebrate our own imperfect one. Let’s celebrate our wins – no matter how small. And if you want, create goals that can help you improve in ways you see fit. For example, maybe you want to eat dinner together more often or would like to have more open and honest discussions with your tween.

Whatever it is, know that you’re already doing great. There’s always room for improvement, but perfection is not where it’s at.
