If you’ve read any of my blog posts in the past, you know I’m a big book lover. And I’m also trying (and I think mainly succeeding) to instill the love of books in my kids as well. So it was a happy surprise to find out that August 9 is also known as National Book Lovers Day.
This got me thinking, how do you go about turning your kids into happy, willing readers?
Chances are that during the school year, they can be bombarded and overwhelmed with numerous reading assignments. Last year, in 6th grade, my daughter was tasked with reading and logging 25 books. This may not seem like a huge number, but factor in all the other classes, assignments, extracurriculars, and just life in general – how do you make time to read for fun and/or make the assigned reading seem enjoyable?
One of the main things is this – all reading is good reading.
Are you sick of all the graphic novels being brought home, and would rather see your kid dive into a chapter book? It’s really ok. Some kids love and devour multiple graphic novels per week. The key is retention. Ask your kids about the book, but do it in a way that shows you’re interested in what they’re interested in – not like you’re quizzing them. Perhaps this can lead to other discussions about different characters and genres they love. This can be the perfect time to take a trip together to the library or bookstore to expand on their book choices and find even more books you can love (and read) together.
Set up your own family book club where each member can pick a book that the whole family can read (together or separately). Afterwards, everyone meets and discusses the book over snacks, of course! This is a great way to not only spend quality time together but also come up with some new books to add to your family favorites.
