There is nothing like the end of a school year to make you realize how fleeting time really is. Every June, like clockwork, I start to get emotional about the end of yet another school year. I can partially blame the fact that my children have always had such great teachers, and the thought of their classes coming to an end makes me want to tear up (or burst into full-blown tears).
But as any mom knows, it is also a slap in the face that time is flying, and those little babies are getting bigger and bigger with each passing school year.
Seeing how much my kids have grown, learned, and changed in just one year makes me proud — but it also tugs at my heart. Time moves fast, and this milestone is a reminder of how quickly they’re growing up. There’s something deeply emotional about realizing how much they can grow over the course of a school year. It’s not just in the fact that my daughter can now read, the new math skills my middle has mastered, or the way my oldest can tell me all about Native American history— it’s the way they all carry themselves differently now.
Their backpacks look smaller on their backs, their handwriting has changed, and they are all more independent. These little signs of growth are amazing, but they’re also reminders that time is moving — fast.
As parents, we live alongside our kids’ milestones. Their transitions are our transitions. And even though we know there’s an exciting new chapter ahead, closing this one comes with a wave of nostalgia. It’s the realization that time isn’t pausing — and that can be a little heartbreaking, even in the midst of celebration.
So soak it all in, Mama. If you’re feeling this wave of emotion as well, ride it.
