Laura Simon PhotographyYay for spring flowers! Daffodils, cherry blossoms, and magnolias, oh my! There’s nothing like the blossoming of spring after winter in New York. I photograph spring sessions in Westchester, NYC, The Hudson Valley, and Fairfield County. Spring is a special (and fleeting) opportunity to create unique photos.

There is a short window of opportunity for outdoor spring flower photos. Preparing for a spring photo session is a unique undertaking, and the effort we all put in will reap all the rewards with gorgeous spring flowers spilling into the frame. Kids love a flower frolic and petal toss (and by kids, I mean me, too). These will be treasured photos you’ll want all over your home and filled in an album to pass down for generations.A family photographed under a tree of flowers.

Here are tips to prepare for your spring photography session.

1. You’ll need to book your spring family photo shoot ahead of time.

It’s best to book your family photo session late winter. If you are on my newsletter list, you will get an email at the precise time you need to book your spring family photos. Not on the list? That way, you don’t need to do any remembering. I send out, at most, let’s be real, one newsletter per season. The newsletter is a reminder to book your photo session for the upcoming months.A boy kneeling in a field of flowers.

The newsletter also includes special photography tips for the season. I only book a few spring family photography sessions to ensure I can time our family photo session with the blooms. The blooming period varies from year to year and can be unpredictable, which brings me to…

2. We will need to be flexible!

Spring is a unique time because the blooms are fleeting, and ideal photo session timing varies depending on the weather. Outdoor family portrait photography sessions are already complicated with the weather variable, and adding a flower variable makes it trickier.A girl holding a flower.

3. Make sure you bring layers!

Spring temperatures can be all over the place, and a passing cloud can turn the temp from *almost summer* to Wait, is winter back!? In case it’s a bit chilly, bring some photo shoot-ready layers so everyone is comfortable enough to play under the blooms during our outdoor family photography session!

4. Follow the recommendations.

Your family photographer (hi!) knows best. Follow recommendations for outfits, dates, and timing for the most beautiful family photos we can make together!

About the process and experience with Laura Simon Photography.

My goal – from booking to getting frames and albums delivered to your door – is to make this process as easy as possible. You do not have time to sort through a ton of photos that are just ok and then request extra editing.

You don’t have time to figure out how to lay out frames on your walls. You are kind of busy with the whole being a parent thing and all the other things you do and are.

I am a very casual photographer. I want things to look real but still gorgeous. The key is using natural light and letting my clients JUST BE rather than forcing awkward poses, “Say cheese” and “Don’t move!”

I do not bring equipment with me – I worked with studio light for years and determined that natural light is my preferred aesthetic because it looks…well, real. It will only be me, my camera, and the little monkey that goes around my lens and farts an awful lot. Who doesn’t laugh at a farting monkey?

I offer sessions throughout Westchester County, Fairfield County, the Hudson Valley & NYC. Please hop over to my website and send me a note to book your photo session.
