Simplifying Your Summer Fitness Routine

0

A family working out over the summer. We made it, Mamas! Sweet summertime. No more dealing with homework, the morning rush (ok, maybe this one is still and always will happen), and all the other September-June activities we like to leave behind. It’s time to soak it all in and enjoy the next two months.

This is not to say summer isn’t without its own stress and challenges. One real challenge moms may face is maintaining or even starting a summer fitness routine. Endless snack requests, sunscreen, and pool floats shouldn’t derail you. These simple tips can help you maintain or start a routine to keep you going to the fall.

1. Incorporate Exercise into Daily Activities

Turn playtime into a workout by playing active games like tag, frisbee, or swimming. You can also do double duty and take your workouts outside while the kids play. Another great option is to go for walks or bike rides together as a family. Hopefully, getting the whole family moving will distract them enough that they won’t tell you they’re bored.

2. Time-Efficient Workouts

Circuit training and HIIT  (High-Intensity Interval Training) workouts are a great way to quickly get in a good workout. These workouts are short but intense, usually lasting between 20-30 minutes. Just because you can’t give your workouts an hour a day doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do that!

3. Set Realistic Goals

Focus on consistency rather than perfection. Small, regular workouts can be more beneficial than occasional intense sessions. Even giving yourself 20 minutes a day can reap major benefits.

4. Create a Schedule

Plan workouts around the family’s schedule. Early mornings or evenings might be quieter times to exercise. I always work out in the morning before the day’s craziness takes over. Treat workout times as non-negotiable appointments. You wouldn’t skip a doctor’s appointment because you didn’t feel like it. View exercise as the same.

5. Make Use of Home Equipment

With kids home from school, getting to the gym may not be as easy, which is why home workouts can be so beneficial. You don’t need a lot; simple equipment like resistance bands and dumbbells can be used for a variety of effective home workouts. Consider investing in a few key pieces that fit your space and budget. You’ll be more likely to do it if you’re looking at the equipment all day.

Staying active should always be a priority, not only during the summer but all year long. Even though it can be more challenging, sticking to a consistent and efficient routine will keep you on track with your goals. So get up, get moving, and take the kids along for the ride (or walk). Then, give them that snack when you get home.
