If you’re a ’90s lover like me, chances are you have been tuning into the hit show Love Story on FX, which follows the story of John F. Kennedy, Jr., and Carolyn Bessette. The ’90s nostalgia gives you all the feels, from the fashion to the freedom from cell phones and social media, and for me…the music.
The music for this show was the real love story for me.
This soundtrack brought me right back to around sixth grade and into all four years of high school. I graduated in 1999, so this musical timeline really brought back lots of memories and emotions, both good and bad.
The iconic “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer, “Free Your Mind” by En Vogue, and the romantic yet poignant, “It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over” by Lenny Kravitz, really had me singing and swaying in front of my TV. Throw in “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” by Sophie B. Hawkins, and I was hooked. Classics from Blind Melon, Annie Lennox, Mazzy Star, Madonna, and Sade also filled coveted spots on the show’s playlist.
Though a very hard choice, my absolute personal favorite would have to be “Linger” by The Cranberries. Maybe because The Cranberries were one of my very first CD purchases in eighth grade, and hearing them transports me to a different time, an easier time, where all I had to worry about was if I did my homework and could get the back of my hair straight enough. My six-year-old son even loves the song now…”Alexa, play Linger!”
The opening song is a haunting cover of “Come Undone” by Duran Duran that immediately draws you in. It also brings a level of sadness knowing about the tragedy that befalls the beloved couple.
In Episode 4, you hear Sade’s “No Ordinary Love,” showing a very much in love new couple dancing together, and you’re just right there in the moment with them. It makes you envy those early days of being hopelessly in love, and when you didn’t care if the whole world was watching, and how silly you may have looked.
The show also has a great cast, phenomenal acting by Naomi Watts as Jackie O., classic outfits that never went out of style, and lots and lots of hair tosses. If you don’t know what I mean, tune in, and you’ll see.
The series will make you want to throw on a black sleeveless turtleneck, straight leg jeans, great shoes, and stroll through NYC while trying to figure yourself out. It might also have you want to grab a pack of cigarettes, if that’s your thing.
I absolutely loved this series and am about to start the finale with a glass of wine. I think I waited so long to start it because I didn’t want the show to be over. I also don’t want to cry, already knowing what happens at the end.
