Fall Feelings Are in the Air

A family playing in the fall leaves. This time of year is filled with feelings of new beginnings and fresh energy. The crisp air and changing leaves put a pep in everyone’s step, including our four-legged friends.

With all the holidays approaching, we begin to hunker down as temperatures dip and look forward to our hot cocoa nights with new hope. This is a time of year when reflection on the current year is at the forefront of our minds. New goals, adjustments, and challenges are being considered. Identifying people, places, and things that impact our quality of life leads us into a deep introspection.

Here are a few tips to guide you on your next journey.

  1. Explore what worked for you this year and what didn’t.
  2. Research new ways to enhance your emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual health.
  3. Remember, we often discover what doesn’t work before we discover what does. Don’t be discouraged. Failure brings you closer to what works.
  4. Start a new class or hobby, or listen to a new podcast.
  5. Exercise your mind, as well as your body.
  6. Surround yourself with good friends encouraging you to grow, laugh, and be grateful.
  7. Begin to weed out negativity in your life. This can mean people, places, and things.
  8. Study something new.
  9. Make one new connection either professionally or personally.
  10. Remind yourself each day you are enough, and celebrate the little things.

Keep in mind that we are role models for our children. They observe our beliefs, behaviors, and relationships. Include your children in your journey. Encourage them to define their own journey. Let them know nothing is written in stone. We can be flexible and nonjudgmental all at once. Keeping a balance with an outlined structure is crucial in creating the space we need to flourish.

Start a tradition with your family each season and do a fun activity each family member can enjoy and participate in. It doesn’t matter how small or big your family activity is. Sit down with your family and begin brainstorming some activities for each season. For example, while yardwork can be seen as tedious in the fall, let’s turn it into family fun. While raking up the leaves, create big piles everyone can jump into. If you don’t have a yard, embark on a leaf collection journey at your local park.

Make crafts and treats each family member can enjoy and participate in. Create funny and unique names for each craft and snack. Start your own recipe book for each season. As each season begins and ends, your refrigerator, craft book, and cookbook will be filled with recipes, memories, and traditions.

Documenting and having keepsakes of each season and holiday can be a tradition that will be passed on through generations. Now, that is priceless.
