I recently came across a post proclaiming July 13 as Embrace Your Geekness Day. And sure, this can be seen as a funny celebration where you can break out your best Star Wars figures, chessboard, or Lord of the Rings memorabilia. However, it also really got me thinking about being true to ourselves and not being embarrassed or ashamed of the things that genuinely make us happy.
It took me way too long to break out of that habit, and it’s certainly something I never want my kids to feel that they have to do.
I want my kids to know they should be proud of their interests and who they are as individuals – it’s what makes each of us special.
Everyone is a geek about something, right? We all have our secret “guilty pleasures,” whether it’s science experiments, Anime, French impressionist paintings – whatever you like and enjoy doing – be proud of it!
And just maybe, your passion for a certain topic or pastime may pique someone else’s interest in that same topic or get them thinking about exploring their own new “geeky” interests. Embrace who you are, and your kids will learn that geekness can actually be a courageous thing.
