It’s a random night, and you’re to-do list is done for the day. The kids are miraculously all in bed, and you actually have some time alone. You settle into the couch, grab the remote, and start looking through Netflix. A half hour later, and you’re still scrolling after watching a million trailers and deciding on nothing. Well, I am here to help you out!
Here is a list of some shows to add to your watchlist for next time!
Drama
The Hunting Wives: Okay ladies, get ready for this one! This show was absolutely insane, but in a really crazy and fun way! Seemingly innocent Sophie, a mother and wife who is still reeling from her past secrets, moves to a Texas town with her husband and young son. She soon finds herself in a world of drama, scandal, and even murder. You will find yourself sucked into the wild antics that have become Sophie’s new normal, going from normal housewife to thrill seeker. Warning: Do not watch this if your kids are awake!
Ginny & Georgia: Everyone loves Georgia, and if you watch this show, you will too! Despite her criminal past, you can’t help rooting for the underdog. With a big heart and an even bigger mouth, Georgia will be sure to make you belly laugh and then cry, all within ten seconds. Her complex and tumultuous relationship with her daughter, Ginny, is the main focus of the show and will have you rooting for the best for both of them. Warning: This show contains elements of self-harm and may be hard to watch for some people.
Landman: Created by Taylor Sheridan, this show starring Billy Bob Thornton and Ali Larter, follows the life of a petroleum landman in Texas. Marriage ups and downs, tensions with billionaire oil tycoons, and the stress of raising a feisty teenage daughter all come to a head in this drama. Ali Larter steals the show with her quick one-liners, while Thornton’s acting skills are spot on. My husband and I were obsessed with this show and can’t wait for season 2. It has a little bit of everything, so we weren’t fighting over the remote.
Big, Little Lies: I watched this series (season one) a long time ago, but I still remember it well. Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, from the opening credits, I was sucked in with the haunting theme song. Nicole Kidman consistently delivers outstanding performances, and her relationship with her husband is truly eye-opening. Not everything is always as it seems. With a picture-perfect life on the outside, you get a harsh portrayal of what life can really be like for some people behind closed doors. I will warn that this show shows instances of domestic violence and can be hard to watch. Follow Kidman’s character Celeste as she watches secrets unfold and lives fall apart.
Emily in Paris & Younger: I haven’t actually watched these two shows, but every friend of mine has, and they’ve absolutely loved the light-hearted fun that the shows offer. People always recommend these two when you want an easy show that can also be relatable. They are also on my watch list! Let me know if the majority is right on these!
Oldies, But Goodies
The Golden Girls: Being one of my all-time favorite shows, you can’t go wrong with a late-night dose of Sophia, Rose, Blanche, and Dorothy. Dorothy’s quick wit and sarcasm, Rose’s sweet innocence, and Blanche’s naughty antics will surely have you laughing. Sophia also joins in the fun with her hilarious one-liners and stories about her time in Sicily. This show is guaranteed to not only make you laugh but also appreciate a show that was ahead of its time in terms of its jokes and storylines.
Friends: You can’t go wrong with this classic sitcom about six friends living in Manhattan together in the same apartment building. Follow them through dating mishaps, family drama, and of course, the natural scenarios about living in the city, all while trying to navigate work and relationships, as well as trying to find yourself, with some help from your friends, of course.
Historical Fiction, Drama, & Romance
Medici: I feel like this show didn’t get the credit or attention it deserved. I first discovered this show in 2020 during COVID. I would watch it during my late-night nursing sessions. My personal favorite was Season 2, which showcased actor Daniel Sharman, who, in my opinion, is very easy on the eyes. I loved the portrayal of Florence in the early days. Add in political drama, art, romance, and architecture, and I was sold. You can find this on Prime TV, as it is sadly no longer on Netflix.
1883/1923: Also created by Taylor Sheridan, the genius behind Yellowstone, these two shows had me on the edge of my seat. If you haven’t seen them yet, I recommend starting in chronological order before watching Yellowstone. These shows follow the Dutton family through hardship as they strive to find their land and ultimately keep it in the family. The storylines are brilliant; however, they do contain violence and some hard-to-watch scenes, so consider that before choosing this drama, which can be quite heavy.
Outlander: This show had me teary-eyed as I watched the love of Claire and Jamie withstand the test of time. And by time, I mean that literally, as they actually are from different time periods! Claire accidentally transports herself back in time, where she meets Jamie, a Scottish soldier. Watch her fall in love with her new life, only to endure much tragedy and hardship to be with the man she loves. This show is based on the best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon.
I could go on and on, but these are the shows that really stood out to me, some new and trendy, some timeless and fun!
A few shows that also deserve some credit, old and new….
Sirens, Grey’s Anatomy, True Detective, Breaking Bad, Seinfeld, Nobody Wants This, Stranger Things, and Firefly Lane
Most of the shows I featured were available to watch on Netflix, Prime Video, and Paramount+.
