2018 was another great year for Westchester County Moms Blog. Our contributors live, work, and parent in Westchester, and are passionate about sharing real stories and honest experiences of parenthood. WCMB loves nothing more than to uplift Westchester County and the moms who live here.

We know motherhood can be difficult when you are a new mom, new in town, or just looking for more ways to get connected. In our area, it can be easy to get lost in the crowd. This is our way to make the world feel a little smaller, and parenting easier, more fun, and less lonely. We hope you get plugged in to Westchester County Moms Blog, chime into the conversation, and make yourself comfortable in our community, online and off.

Here is a list of our top 10 most viewed posts of 2018! Make sure to read the one’s you may have missed, reread the posts that you were able to connect with, and share the one’s you love!

1. A True Misfit: My Life as an Old Mom/Young Grandmother

“I dared to be different (I know it wasn’t planned), but I’m privileged to literally enjoy the fruits of my labor crossing into a new generation with my children and grandchild. I’m directly faced with the passage of time and it’s so scary. Take it from me, it goes so fast. In the meantime, I’ll bounce between my little girl who’s just now blossoming into a young woman, and my little guy working so hard to take his first step. And I’ll be honored to be called a misfit mom. In a way, aren’t we all?”

2. I’m Jealous of My Friends Who Waited to Have Kids

“I tried to balance all the wants of a 20 something in the Big Apple with the demands of motherhood. I wanted to go to Brooklyn rooftop parties on Saturday and boozy brunches on Sundays with him and his boyfriend. Instead, I usually fell asleep to Daniel Tiger on Saturdays and cleaned blueberries off every surface on Sundays.”

diet3. My Son Told Me to Lose Weight and I’m Taking His Advice

“Why? I like the way I look,” I replied, hoping to jog his memory of all those conversations we’d had about the inside being what mattered and how liking yourself is more important than what others think.“So we can ride bikes this summer.” He said it rather matter of factly, without judgment, and then he went back to playing. I was stunned. He wasn’t comparing me to some societal standard, he just wanted to have more fun with his mom. The truth hurt more than my assumption.”

tubes

4. Hear Me Out! The Push for Ear Tube Surgery

“I remembered all the times I had told parents that the “simple” surgery does wonders for children. I had seen the immense progress children made immediately after surgery. Why was I so hesitant this time? Well because…I was never a mother. I never had to make difficult decisions for another human being, especially one that I loved to the end of the earth. And it was then that I understood exactly what all of my client’s parents had gone through.”

tough stuff5. Parenting Through the Tough Stuff

“I don’t have all the answers of how to handle Stuff like this. I don’t even necessarily have a clue what I am doing. But using that as my mini mantra – “taking care of Mama makes you a better Mama” – I did establish a few unbreakable rules for myself that have been key to my survival. I am certain of a few things – keep changes as minimal as possible for the kiddos.”

6. Forever in Our Hearts – Remembering Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month

“You see, when you lose a child, it is beyond isolating. The world around you continues moving and yet, you are stuck, motionless, unable to understand how you must go on living without a piece of your heart. There are the select few in your life that will stop their lives to grieve with you, hold your hand, but most will feel lost in trying to figure out what to say, what to do. As a mother of angels, all I can ask for is that my children are remembered and mentioned.”

water7. Upping My Water Game

“I have gone hours, even days without having one sip of water, only sustaining on coffee, soda or juice. Gross I know. Friends and family would constantly go on about the benefits of staying hydrated; better skin, weight loss, promotion of cardiovascular health. I just was never motivated to drink water. It was never exciting enough, and I would always pass it over for a nice cold diet coke or iced tea.”

8. In Defense of Older Moms

“Being a mother also requires a fair amount of selflessness, and I don’t think I possessed that to a huge degree when I was younger. I’d say waking up three, four, five times a night to breast feed appears high on the list of selfless acts. Forget about having children, even being pregnant is an act of selflessness—the aches and pains, the weight gain—I would not have been willing to put up with those things at twenty-two. And there is something about experience being the best teacher—I barely had my own stuff together when I was in my twenties—how could I have raised children when I could barely remember to buy toilet paper”

wine time9. Whine Time Doesn’t Have to Mean Wine Time

“For a long time it was a routine for me to come home from work, make myself a four o’clock cup of coffee, and then pour a nice big glass of wine (or two!). Red, white, rose, I’ve poured them all! My daughter even started referring to it as “Mommy Juice.” It seems innocent enough, but all those extra calories really got me thinking: Do I really need that glass of wine? Luckily for me the answer is no. I don’t need it. There are plenty of other ways to deal with stress and to unwind after a long day.”

dating10. Sex and the Single Mom: Why You Should Date, Even if You’re Exhausted

“If you want your children to grow up and have happy, healthy dating relationships – shouldn’t you show them how that’s done? If you’re a single mom like me, then your last relationship didn’t work out so well. There’s no shame in that. In fact, separating from something that wasn’t working is brave and admirable. Giving up on love after is not.”
