Let’s Celebrate National S’mores Day

Holding a S'mores by the campfire.Happy National S’mores Day, my Westchester friends! August is the perfect month to enjoy this quintessential campfire snack made of marshmallows and chocolate sandwiched between two crunchy graham crackers. The roasted marshmallow sits on top of the chocolate, and the heat from the fire makes everything gooey and delicious.

Here are some ways to celebrate S’mores Day. Oh, and don’t forget the wipes!

Watch the Sandlot. This is where the iconic line “Your’re killin’ me Smalls!” originates from. S’mores-loving Ham Porter also lays out the perfect and classic summer S’more recipe. FIRST, you take the graham. IYKYK.

Search for that perfect marshmallow roasting stick. This is a great pre-S’mores activity and a surefire way to get the kids involved while a responsible adult starts the fire. If a stick from the woods grosses you out, your local grocery store certainly has those special campfire roasting sticks.

Get creative with variations of the original S’more:

  1. Replace Hershey’s chocolate with a Kit Kat or REECE’S.
  2. Add extra crunch with a few pretzels.
  3. Add sliced banana on a REECE’S for Elvis-inspired s’mores. You can even spread a layer of peanut butter on the graham cracker.
  4. Out of marshmallows? Substitute with some Fluff.

Have a S’more eating competition. My personal record is three, set at the annual girls’ trip to Downsville, where my college roommate builds THE best campfire. Dare I challenge myself to four (and a stomach ache) this year?

Be unconventional. Don’t have access to a campfire? Fear not! You can always enlist the help of your backyard fire pit, microwave, stovetop, candle (hello, Sandlot), air fryer, or oven. You can also invest in a tabletop S’mores maker. This makes a neat Christmas or birthday gift too!

Bake cookies inspired by S’mores. You get to indulge in all of the ingredients S’mores offers but with less mess.

Break out a box of the Girl Scout S’mores Cookies from the depths of your freezer. Everyone loves a frozen GS cookie! Though, since we’re being honest, my stash of Girl Scout Cookies is L-O-N-G gone.

Now that you are ready for the festivities, how will you celebrate National S’mores Day?
