Anyone with young kids knows that getting out of the house is essential, and there’s nothing better than a day trip to keep the whole family happy!
One of the great things I love about living in Westchester County is the number of fun day trips it offers families.
But not every county is like Westchester, with its beautiful land and vast green open spaces. We are lucky to live in our bucolic little corner of the country just outside NYC. There are places to take the family all year round. Whether you’re in the mood for an outdoor adventure at one of its many parks and gardens, a visit to a nature preserve, a day at the farm, or a cultural trip to a museum, there’s something for everyone in Westchester.
Untermyer Park and Gardens {Yonkers}
Untermyer Park and Gardens in Yonkers is stunning! This historical estate and “Garden of Eden” set along the Hudson River overlooking the Palisades is a must-visit. Pack a picnic and let the kids run free before relaxing in one of Westchester’s most beautiful and unusual spots.
Wolf Conservation Center {South Salem}
The Wolf Conservation Center is one of the most unique things to do in Westchester. A non-profit organization dedicated to promoting wolf conservation, it offers a variety of programs, some geared toward children and families. When we visited, we learned about fascinating wolf facts, saw the wolves in action, and even howled with them. My kids love this place!
Greenburgh Nature Center {Scarsdale}
This awesome nature center is a kids’ magnet for all it offers – nature trails, outdoor animal exhibits, meadows, a great lawn, a playground, and two floors of animal exhibits indoors. I can never get my kids out of this place.
Katonah Museum of Art {Katonah}
Who says you can’t go to a museum outside the city? The Katonah Museum of Art is a small but precious gem. It’s unique because it has no permanent collection but about three to four traveling exhibitions annually. What makes it so great for families is its “School’s Out/Arts In” program for those long staycation days. It comes in handy for my family on rainy days.
Muscoot Farm {Katonah}
Muscoot Farm is Westchester’s beloved farm. Families love visiting it for its 50+ animals, including horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, turkeys, pigs, and more. The farm has an active calendar full of events all year round.
Ward Pound Ridge Reservation {Pound Ridge}
The Ward Pound Ridge Reservation is Westchester’s biggest park, with 4,135 acres of gorgeous land. We’ve explored its trails and streams and seen horseback riders – there’s even camping for the adventurous types.
Croton Gorge Park {Cortlandt}
Croton Gorge Park is home to the New Croton Dam. Most people (including my kids) visit to see its main attraction, a large waterfall. You can see it from the bottom and top and walk around the area, making it an enjoyable excursion.
Kykuit: The Rockefeller Estate {Sleepy Hollow}
This historic estate offers guided tours of the Rockefeller family home, filled with art, antiques, and stunning architecture. Visitors can also explore the manicured gardens and breathtaking views of the Hudson River. It is perfect for history buffs and art enthusiasts.
Hudson RiverWalk Park {Tarrytown}
Enjoy a leisurely day strolling along the Hudson River. This scenic waterfront park offers stunning views of the Tappan Zee Bridge, picnic areas, and plenty of photo opportunities.
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts {Katonah}
Spend a day immersed in art and music at this cultural hub. Tour the Mediterranean-inspired Rosen House or enjoy an outdoor concert on the beautifully landscaped grounds.
Lasdon Park and Arboretum {Somers}
This 234-acre property features themed gardens, hiking trails, and a conservatory with seasonal exhibits. Families will love the Trail of Honor, the Veterans Memorial, and the Dinosaur Trail.
Rockefeller State Park Preserve {Pleasantville}
Discover miles of well-maintained trails perfect for walking, jogging, or birdwatching. The scenic Swan Lake Trail is a must-visit for its serene views and peaceful atmosphere.
Kensico Dam Plaza {Valhalla}
This iconic park features a massive stone dam, walking paths, and open spaces for picnics. It’s a popular spot for outdoor concerts, festivals, and relaxing family outings.
