All Things Pumpkin

October is National Pumpkin Month, and there’s no better time to celebrate one of fall’s most iconic symbols. From jack-o’-lanterns glowing on porches to the sweet aroma of pumpkin bread fresh from the oven, pumpkins are one of the season’s most beloved staples and are woven into our autumn traditions.

Throughout October, pumpkins take center stage, and there are many days to celebrate.

  • October 1 is National Pumpkin Spice Day.
  • The first Wednesday of October is National Pumpkin Seed Day.
  • October 21 is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day.
  • October 26 is National Pumpkin Day.

Pumpkins are everywhere right now — from pumpkin patches and Halloween to savory recipes and sweet treats — but what do we know about these ubiquitous gourds?

Pumpkins are more than a seasonal decoration. They have a long history, dating back nearly 10,000 years, and come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and forms. Pumpkins are low in calories yet packed with nutrients, making them a true autumn superfood that is both nourishing and versatile.

Canned pumpkin for cooking and baking is typically a blend of various winter squash varieties, and is not the orange pumpkin commonly used for Halloween carving. (Fun fact: The popular “pumpkin spice” flavor does not contain any actual pumpkin, but is a spice blend often made from cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and allspice.)

It’s pumpkin’s time to shine, and where better than in baked goods?

From cozy cookies and fluffy muffins to spiced bread and festive pies, the following recipes — some of my perennial favorites — will fill your family’s kitchen with everything you love about fall, making the season extra delicious.
